Room with a view

Daar sta ik dan, begin oktober 2021, samen met mijn vrouw, op het verlaten busstation van Obergurgl in het Ötztal Oostenrijk, niet ver van Sölden. Met z'n tween, verder geen mens te bekennen. Het dorp bestaat uit niet veel meer dan enkele winkels en een bakkerij die gesloten zijn, een dokterspost waarvan de deur openstaat en verder héél veel hotels, allemaal gesloten!

Om de tijd te doden tot we weer met dezelfde bus terug konden, zijn we toch het dorpje maar gaan verkennen. De bizarre aanblik van dit uitgestorven skidorp deed mij denken aan het boek 'Hybernation' van fotograaf Sander van Wettum waarin hij de verlaten hotels aan de Spaanse Costa's vast legt.

Het idee voor 'Room with a view' was geboren. Een fotoserie die de impact van de toerisme economie op het alpine landschap probeerd weer te geven. Gedurende 5 jaar hebben we in het najaar de toeristische of daaraan gelieerde infrastructuur opgezocht en vastgelegd. In de relatieve rust van het laagseizoen komen deze zaken duidelijker naar voren.

De titel 'Room with a view' verwijst naar de wens van menig toerist die een hotelkamer boekt in een hotel dat misschien de helft van het jaar leeg staat en/of gesloten is. De vraag die rijst, is die view nog wel zo mooi en ongerept? Als we het willen zien, zie je de steeds groter wordende invloed op het landschap overal. Wat betekent dat voor de toekomst van de Alpen als 'ongerept' berggebied waarbij we ook klimaatverandering niet uit het oog moeten verliezen?

There I was, in early October 2021, with my wife, at the deserted bus station in Obergurgl in the Ötztal valley of Austria, not far from Sölden. Just the two of us, not a soul in sight. The village consists of little more than a few shops and a bakery, all closed, a doctor’s office with its door wide open, and a whole lot of hotels, all closed!

To kill time until we could take the same bus back, we decided to explore the village anyway. The bizarre sight of this deserted ski village reminded me of the book *Hybernation* by photographer Sander van Wettum, in which he captures the abandoned hotels along Spain’s Costa regions.

The idea for “Room with a View” was born. A photo series that attempts to capture the impact of the tourism economy on the alpine landscape. Over the course of five years, we sought out and documented tourist-related infrastructure in the fall. In the relative quiet of the off-season, these aspects become more apparent.

The title “Room with a View” refers to the desire of many tourists who book a hotel room in a hotel that may be empty and/or closed for half the year. The question that arises is: is that view still so beautiful and unspoiled? If we look closely, we can see the ever-increasing impact on the landscape everywhere. What does that mean for the future of the Alps as an “unspoiled” mountain region, especially when we must not lose sight of climate change?
